WHAT IS SOLAR ENERGY?

The Sun is the center of our solar system, the source of life on earth. It is a big and flaming sphere of gases with an enormous gravity which grips the planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, keeping them from spinning into deep space.

The sun has produced energy for billions of years. A process called nuclear fusion converts hydrogen to helium deep in the sun’s core. Fusion creates energy that travels to earth in the form of sun rays.

The sun is the ultimate source of energy behind wind, water, oil, gas and coal. Sun heat drives air and water that turn wind turbines and power hydroelectric dams. Sun lights helps plants grow which eventually turn into wood, coal and gas.

Solar energy has been used by people for hundreds of years to cook food, keep warm, and to dry clothes. Today, it is also used to create electricity.

How is electricity used when there is no sun?

The sun is an inexhaustible source of energy, but it is not possible to enjoy the sun every hour of the day, in this respect it is not a continuous energy. Sunlight hours may differ depending on weather conditions, time of day and country locations.Solar panels also cannot generate electricity when there is no sun. We may need to use lamps or electrical appliances in homes, schools, at night or when there is no sun. In such cases, there is a system that allows us to use electrical energy.

In sunny weather, the panels can produce more electricity than the electrical energy we use at school. In this case, the battery that has been added to the system stocks this electrical energy. At night or when there is no sun, we can use the energy stored in this battery until it runs out. The energy stored in this battery can be consumed, when using electricity on days when there is no sun, or when using excessive electricity at night. In this case, it is possible to benefit from the electricity of the city. The advantage of such a system for us is that we will not be invoiced by the grid operator for the electricity that we use in our school or the invoice will be very low in winter when solar radiation is low. This system is both ecological and benefits the budget of our school.

HOW DOES SOLAR ENERGY TURN INTO THE ELECTRICITY?

The solar panels convert sunlight directly into the electricity. They are made up of smaller units called solar cells. These cells consist of a positive and a negative film of silicon placed under a thin slice of glass.

Sun is 150.000.000 km.’s away from the earth but its sun rays arrive to the earth in just 8 mins 20 seconds. When these rays hit the solar cells, they knock the electrons of the silicon. Sun light sets the electrons in these atoms into motion which creates an electrical current. This current is moved through the cables in the solar panels to an inverter. Inverter converts this current into electricity which we can use directly or store for the night.

WHAT ARE DIFFERENT WAYS OF CONVERTING SOLAR ENERGY TO ELECTIRICITY?

You can either use solar panels to power your own house, school, hospital or any other building or you can install them in big fields and form solar farms to power hundreds of buildings, you can also use floating panels on still waters.

Solar panels can still produce electricity in shadow but more the sunshine the more efficient they are at producing electricity. So a country full of sun, is naturally advantegous to use solar energy.
